Hello and welcome back to the Eighth Street Films blog! We are back with another blog post regarding our upcoming documentary about the 90 years of Wartburg College athletics. The theme of this blog post is going to be centered around the legacy, memory and the alumni of the Wartburg Knights.
As we have passed 90 years, the Wartburg sports teams have shown themselves to be more than a collection of organizations, but an interwoven community that is living and breathing. If you walk on the grounds of the historic Wartburg campus, you may find it to be inevitable to hear of the strong echoes that line the halls of the Hall of Champions in the W Wellness Center.
Those echoes are found within the legacy of championships, wins, loses and dry seasons. The legacy built at Wartburg College cannot be built without the student athletes of the generations past, the faithful alumni who have worn the notable orange and black.
Every generation who has been a Knight has a story to tell, and our most recent interviews have shown the importance of that need. Looking back to the early years of the Wartburg Knights, we see the athletes who practiced in the modest wellness facilities but played with a spirit of heart and dedication. We have seen the birth of women’s sports in the 1970s as Title IX was inducted into the college sports world, and the dynasties of the early 2000s as the college became a national name with sports like wrestling and track and field. These stories are not just meant to be kept archived and stored for dust collecting, they are meant to carry the voices and moments long after they have graduated from college.
This important milestone of 90 years of Wartburg College athletics is a reminder of tradition and legacy but is much more about family. Family that is built by success and defeat, struggle and adversity and a shared mission to succeed and lead by the Knight’s values: leadership, service, faith and learning.
The legacy lives on because talented and devoted student-athletes never really left to continue the service of this treasured tradition of Wartburg athletics but have passed the torch to those who have come after them.
