Matthew Tudor personal blog

Hello and welcome to the Eighth Street Films website and blog! My name is Matthew Tudor, and I have the honor of working with six other fantastic journalism majors from Wartburg College, as we tell the story of Wartburg College’s 90 years of being the Knights.

I am the blog writer for Eighth Street Films, and it has been such an honor and privilege to share with you all about our progress on our documentary about this incredible milestone of Wartburg College’s history. I wanted to take this opportunity to share a little bit of my story, why I chose Wartburg College as my next educational home, why I chose journalism as my major, and what my next steps are after graduation!

To begin with, why I choose journalism as my major is actually an interesting reason as I look back on it. During the first half of my high school career, I desperately wanted to be an electrical engineer, I loved building Legos as a kid and enjoy working with my hands. I even took a metals class in my freshman year of high school and really enjoyed it! I then came to realize that to become an electrical engineer, you needed a lot of math knowledge. I was not the best when it came to math. I decided that maybe electrical engineering was not in my path. Then I slowly discovered my love for writing!

My love for writing began through Dungeons and Dragons actually. Creating worlds, writing a pleasing and flowing story for others to take part in was really appealing to me. Then as I grew up in high school, I found myself growing a love for politics and criminal justice. Now I am pursuing journalism with the hopes of being an investigative journalist, and my time at Wartburg College and my time and service in the military as a public affairs mass communications specialist has provided me with so much experience in the journalism world.

Why did I decide to go to Wartburg College? Well, it honestly started with my time at an All-State Choir camp at the college. As soon as I walked into the campus, I knew that I was going to go to college after high school. Then as I became a senior in high school, it took one visit to convince me that this would be my next home after graduating high school. It gave me a sense of closeness in community, comfort in the faculty who are in charge of the journalism department and my desire to be close to my family. That is why I chose Wartburg College, and I am so grateful for the friends, colleagues, professors and mentors who have been a part of my time at Wartburg College!

Finally, what I plan to do after I graduate from Wartburg College, and there are many different plans in which I have considered. My plans vary on potentially living in Waverly full-time and working for the newspaper in Waverly as a writer or social media manager, another potential plan is moving down to the Des Moines area and hopefully working for the Des Moines Register.

There are so many potential workplaces in store for me after I graduate, and in line with my future career field. I look forward to the rest of my time at Wartburg and know that I will miss the campus when I leave. I will miss my friends, the mentors, the extracurricular clubs and choir. But I again look forward to the future after college and becoming a man who can report on truth and create content that is pleasing to the eye.

My greatest hope is that I can leave a legacy through my life and give my experience and knowledge to others and younger students. I am grateful for the ways in which Wartburg has provided me with those opportunities, and I hope others can be inspired not only by me, but by my fellow Eighth Street Films team members as well!
