Hello, and welcome to Eighth Street Film’s blog, where we will be sharing our progress on the production of our documentary! As well as bringing forth the story of our documentary! Our team at Eighth Street Films is extremely excited to begin our journey toward creating our documentary, which will be focusing on… 90 years of Wartburg College Knights athletics!
Ninety years ago, Wartburg College stepped into a new light as they changed from their previous mascot and title to the Wartburg Knights in the 1935-36 school year. This was also the year when they became a member of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Knights were not yet a dynasty when it came to the athletic world. They were just starting their new journey and life as the Wartburg Knights, along with student athletes and coaches that would begin to mold the Wartburg legacy into that of growth, grit and determination.
Wartburg College’s earliest sports teams laid the foundation of the athletic successes and failures that would come in the future. Small crowds may have been present at the events, but they still built a priceless piece of sports legacy: commitment. They may have traveled long distances and practiced in facilities that may not have been adequate in today’s light, but they still built commitment.
Time went on, and the culture not only grew, but started to form a whole new breed of sports on Wartburg’s campus. While it was not easy, and much of what Wartburg began decades ago, but generations of student athletes from every sport on campus embraced adversity. Pushing the limits. Striving for more. Believing for better.
This story exists because Wartburg College never shied away from its purpose. Forming diligent, resilient, team-minded students and alumni who carry on the Wartburg Knight spirit after leaving the campus grounds. The Wartburg Knight’s legacy is celebrated today not just as achievement and glory, but as a transformation of life throughout the generations of time.
